Search underway for inaugural blood cancer chair

A $3 million endowment has launched the search for a clinician or scientist to lead a new blood cancer research program focused on prevention, early detection, and diagnostics.

Applications have opened for a new endowed chair designed to boost research into blood cancer prevention, early detection, and diagnostics.

The appointment is backed by the largest single non-government investment in blood cancer research in Western Australia’s history.

The Leukaemia Foundation and The University of Western Australia (UWA) have launched the search for the inaugural Leukaemia Foundation Tony Fini Chair in Blood Cancer, following a $3 million investment announced last year.

The position aims to strengthen research in prevention, early detection, and diagnostics, areas the Leukaemia Foundation says have historically been underrepresented in blood cancer research.

The role is open to clinician researchers and laboratory-based researchers working across discovery and translational research, including adult and paediatric blood cancers.

The successful candidate will lead a multidisciplinary research program, mentor early-career researchers, and build strategic collaborations across the sector.

The foundation’s head of research Bill Stavreski said the appointment was intended to build Australia’s research capacity while positioning Western Australia as a leader in blood cancer research.

“The successful candidate will be an outstanding researcher in blood cancer, ready to lead an ambitious and internationally competitive program focused on prevention, early detection and diagnostics – areas traditionally underrepresented in blood cancer research,” he said.

“We are seeking an exceptional applicant committed to accelerating research that will help address crucial gaps in research and deliver meaningful impact for patients, families and communities affected by blood cancer now and into the future.”

Named after WA philanthropist Tony Fini, the Chair has been established with support from the Tony Fini Foundation, which has backed the foundation since 2010.

The $3 million endowment is the largest single non-government investment in blood cancer research in Western Australia’s history.

Applications close at 11.55pm AWST on 12 July 2026.
